With hooks coming at you from all angles, you may as well surrender…. For those who like to see a female contender on the male-dominated modern rock charts, put your money on Mieka.

SXSW Examiner: The Mieka Canon brought haunting, powerful folk style to SXSW
author: mieka
excerpt:
The Mieka Canon’s lyrical folk sound is reminiscent of Tori Amos with an edgier backing band, or perhaps a female version of Jeff Buckley. The band’s unique blend of powerful, poetic lyrics accompanied by melodic, rock-influenced guitars mesmerized the crowd in the smallish venue, leading many a hungover partygoer to groove along before it even hit mid-afternoon.
she gave us five stars as well !!

Noise and Booze – “The Mieka Canon, Boston 02_24_10″
author: mieka
excerpt:
Mieka’s smokey vocals and infectious charisma carried the crowd away from the rainy night toward a sanctuary of warm, bluesy oblivion. Now don’t get me wrong, her songs are not of the cheerful uplifting breed. In fact, songs like “Your a marked man” and “We’re all gonna die,” suggest a dark spirit lives inside this young singer. But what we saw, or rather felt, was the fire and passion of her soul. And believe me, as someone who is all too jaded by musicians who get by on a look and a schtick, it felt GOOD.

River Cities’ Reader – “Escaping the Trap: The Mieka Canon”
author: mieka
excerpt:
…there’s an obvious chemistry between the singer and the band. The EP’s “Colossal” melds Pauley’s powerful voice with the band’s musical color in a way reminiscent of Aimee Mann, but with serious soul and some arena-rock aspirations. Lovely gives way to a big-rock climax, and it’s nearly undeniable.

excerpt:
“Mieka is kind of bluesy, kind of R&B,” said Cassagnol. “… [Citizen Cope] is so much funkier, and yet it totally works because Mieka has got that down. But then we can get on stage with Ben Kweller and we can bring out more of rock and garage sound, so it can work with Ben Kweller.”

teaparty liked our cmj show !! thanks girls …
excerpt:
The only thing more disarming than the pipes on Mieka Pauley of The Mieka Canon was the sheer number of diehard fans packed into the tight space of Rockwood Music Hall. Lyrics were sang, requests were shouted, and the band happily obliged by switching up their setlist to pack it with crowd favorites.

The Stimulist – “Harvard alumna-cum-Fun Fearless Rocker Mieka Pauley”
author: mieka
excerpt:
Mieka calls her music “soulful alt-pop/indie-rock.” We just call it good shit. Think (a grittier) Sarah McLachlan meets (a well-adjusted) Bjork. Plus brilliant lyrics.
